It’s a voice we know so well. But it’s fair to say that Aaron Paul is best known for his acting, be it as the long-suffering Jesse Pinkman in Breaking Bad or the high-octane performance in Need for Speed. As fans we have watched him excel at his craft, giving us characters that we are forever rooting to succeed.
Did you know that Aaron Paul also has an impressive voice acting career as well?

You should know about his star turn in the award-winning BoJack Horseman as Todd Chavez, a show he also co-produced. Now it’s probably time to dig a bit deeper into this part of Aaron’s career and discover just what his voice has been leant to.
HELP I’M A FISH
AP’s first professional credit in voice acting surprises many people even to this day. It came In the English language version of Help! I’m a Fish. This beloved animated film was released in 2000/2001. Aaron Paul played the part of Chuck, a nerdy, glasses wearing kid who, as the title suggests, turns into a fish. Although at times you can hear Aaron’s tones clearly, it’s not immediately obvious. This film also misspelled Aaron’s name as Aaron Poul in the end titles.
2012
It took another 12 years before AP added another voice credit to his name. In fact in 2012 he added two. First up was the character of Glenn in Robot Chicken: DC Comic’s Special. It’s just one skit entitled ‘The Legion of Doom draws names for Secret Santa’. It’s less that 2 minutes in length. Glenn is picked on by the rest of the characters for the most part.
Also in 2012. AP appeared for the first of three episodes in the animated cartoon series ‘Tron: Uprising’, based on the popular sci-fi films. Playing a character called Cyrus, this is one of the rare occasions that AP plays the bad guy. Fair to say he turns bad due to the hero’s own making. An interesting if slightly crazy character, one I wish we could have seen in live action.
The Oddity

Aaron Paul, along with Bryan Cranston have a cool claim to fame. Although not technically a voice acting role, this is an animated series. It’s rare to be able to say you appeared in The Simpsons but not in animated form but AP has this oddity. He appeared in person as Jesse Pinkman, alongside Walter White. They were both watching the Simpsons during a break from cooking meth (we assume). I’m not sure how many other actors can say this. So even though AP has a Simpsons credit to his name, it wasn’t for voice acting on this occasion!
A Talking Horse

One of AP’s first major projects post Breaking Bad was to jump on board a new spin to adult animation television. BoJack Horseman took risks, and covered subject matters not normally found in a cartoon. It paid off and won a lot of critical acclaim and awards. The show won critics choice award for Best Animation Series for three years running (2018, 2019 and 2020).
Running from 2014 to 2020, clocking up 77 episodes in total AP starred alongside Will Arnett, Alison Brie and Amy Sedaris as the loveable goof Todd Chavez. AP not only voiced a character, he was also a producer for the show. AP got involved even before the show had been picked up by a network. Becoming part of the early stages of development, AP saw it’s potential early on. He then actively helped the team secure a deal with Netflix. When the show was cancelled 6 years later, he expressed his disappointment at the decision online.
Taking the lead
The first time that AP voiced the lead in his voice acting career came in the English language version of the feature film ‘Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV’. Playing the hero Nyx Ulric, AP voices a character that in looks was based on French model ‘Johan Akan’. The story forms part of the Final Fantasy computer game universe and first major motion picture to use its universe. The story deals with Nyx trying to protect the kingdom from plans to steal the sacred crystal, and in turn protect the magic and power. AP’s voice works perfectly with the character, and it’s a nice change of pace to hear him acting out a more traditional action hero role.
The unexpected but cool cameo
In 2017 there was a very neat and unexpected voice cameo by AP in the critically acclaimed TV series Black Mirror. He appeared in the episode ‘USS Callister’. AP voiced an uncredited character, Gamer691, only heard at the very end but made memorable by the fact the episode was led by Jesse Plemons, creating a nice little Breaking Bad reunion for the pair. The episode itself quickly became a fan favourite.
A Podcast Adventure
In 2021 it was announced that AP had signed on as a lead for a brand new original podcast audio series for Audible. The story was written by award winning author James Patterson. It was to be called Cold Case and in a shrewd piece of casting Aaron Paul was cast alongside Krysten Ritter, a match made in heaven. Only this time they were playing brother and sister, which admittedly took a little time to get used to!
Playing a homicide detective called Billy Harney, the audio adventure centers around a missing black book and certainly keeps you on your toes. Memorably, it also gives you AP attempting to do stand up comedy (in character of course!). He plays a family man who is struggling after a career setback. The added pressure of a father who is a legend in the force putting more pressure on Billy’s work and reputation. The story is told in 9 parts, and leaves you very much hoping for more stories. Billy is a character you just cant help rooting for, in true AP tradition!
You can purchase The Coldest Case from Audible now!
We really hope to see more voice work in the future, AP has the perfect voice for voice acting!
